The National Election Commission (NEC) of the Republic of Korea distributed a total of just over 2.007 billion Korean Won ($1.65 million USD) in political deposits to political parties from October to December last year.
Unlike donations made directly to the Political Fundraising Association (PFAs) of politicians such as members of the National Assembly, anybody can make political deposits to the National Election Commission, including public officials and private school teachers.
According to the Political Fund Act, these donations are distributed to the relevant political parties every quarter depending on whether the party has a negotiating group in the National Assembly, the number of seats in the party has in the National Assembly, or the number of votes in the most recent National Assembly elections.
The NEC announced that 22,054 people contributed just over 2.05 billion won ($1.7 million USD) in political funds to the NEC during 2018. Of these, 22,013 people (99.8%) donated an amount of less than 100,000 Korean won.
The NEC has distributed political deposits to each political party every quarter after deducting the necessary expenses. In 2018, of the total amount, the Minjoo Party of Korea were paid 640 million Korean won ($560,000 USD), the Liberty Korea Party were paid 630 million won ($555,000 USD), The Bareunmirae Party were paid 460 million Korean won ($405,000 USD), the Party for Democracy and Peace were paid 120 million Korean won ($105,000 USD), the Justice Party were paid 120 million Korean won ($105,000 USD), the Minjung Party were paid 40 million won ($35,000 USD), and the Korean Patriots Party 1 million Korean won ($885 USD).
