Delegations of Election-related International Organizations selected Korea as the seat of the secretariat of the A-WEB

= Finally confirmed on the Inaugural Assembly of  the A-WEB scheduled to be held in October in Seoul=

The National Election Commission (NEC) announced that Republic of Korea is selected as the seat of secretariat of the Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB) on the 3rd Working Group Meeting for the establishment of the A-WEB held from March 26th to 29th in Jeju.

The A-WEB aims to strengthen electoral democracy worldwide, support countries in democratic transition to promote the development of democracy and exchange of experience or expertise among members and so on.

In the meeting, regional associations in Central and Eastern Europe, Africa and Americas including AAEA whose Chair is Republic of Korea as well as Election-related International Organizations such as UNDP, International IDEA, IFES and EISA attended.

There is main substance of the Charter of the A-WEB as follow:

▲ Support for capacity-building of election management bodies, enhancing their professionalism through dispatching election experts and for the improvement of election-related laws and procedures 

▲ Education and training for election-related officials and other stakeholders such as parties, politicians and citizens to maintain sustainability of operating democracy.

▲ Support for free and fair elections through election observation programs.

▲ Holding international seminars, conferences and workshops on current issues on a regular basis

▲ Joint and comparative study on electoral institutions, establishment of necessary databases and dissemination of good electoral practices

▲ The seat of the Secretariat shall be situated in Republic of Korea.

▲ The General Assembly shall approve the appointment of the Secretary General based on the recommendation by the Executive Board following the suggestion by the Head of the Election Management Body of the country where the Secretariat is located.

The Charter of the A-WEB agreed on this meeting will be finally determined by being submitted and approved on the Inaugural Assembly of the A-WEB scheduled to be held in October in Seoul. Then the A-WEB will inaugurate officially.
