The National Election Commission of the Republic of Korea (NEC) announced that Chief Planning and Coordination Officer Bak Yeong-soo has been appointed as the new Deputy Secretary General as of November 21.

 

Deputy Secretary General Bak has held a number of senior positions including Director of the Legal Affairs Division, Director General of Legal Affairs, Director General of Audit and Inspection and Chief Planning and Coordination Officer.

NEC Deputy Secretary General Profile

 

• Deputy Secretary General Bak Yeong-soo has held numerous senior positions, including Director of the Legal Affairs Division, Director General of Legal Affairs, Director General of Audit and Inspection and Chief Planning and Coordination Officer. He has a deep understanding of laws related to politics and is seen as an expert on election law.  

 

• In 2013, in his role as Director General of Legal Affairs, he proposed the revision of the election related laws to greatly enhance the freedom of political expression election campaigning, which put the voters at the center of election law. In the lead up to the elections for heads of cooperatives, he also helped lay the foundation for the enactment of the Entrusted Elections, Including Elections for Public Groups which regulates the entrusted elections in a standardized way. 

 

• During his tenure as Director General of Inspection, he took the lead in creating a clean electoral culture by enacting measures such as strengthening expertise in investigation into election crime on cyber space, and establishing a forensic investigation system in response to the changing election environment.

 

• As the Chief Planning and Coordination Officer he contributed to increasing voter turnout in the 20th National Assembly elections by creating a nationwide participatory atmosphere that attracted voters'' attention to the elections. He served as the second Chairperson of the 20th National Assembly Boundary Delimitation Commission, which was established as an independent body under the National Election Commission.
