The NEC Calls for Fair Saenuri Intra-Party Elections, Including the Election for Party Leader

The National Election Commission (NEC) of the Republic of Korea has announced that it is enacting policies to thoroughly investigate for any acts that may violate the law in respect to Saenuri Party intra-party competitions for the party leader and Supreme Council to be held on August 9. 

 

The Political Parties Act in relation to intra-party elections for the party leader and other elections prohibits:

 

• Any act of providing any item such as money or material goods to an elector or any person for the purpose of vote buying  

• Any act of circulating false information for the purpose of defeating or electing a candidate

• Any act that impedes the freedom of a intra-party competitions

 

On August 2, the NEC sent out official letters to all candidates running in the intra-party elections requesting their cooperation for the clean and fair conduct of these elections. 

 

Still, the NEC has raised concerns that the convention during the joint rally was overheated by organizational mobilization, and in order for lawful competitions, the NEC has requested the cooperation of the party, candidates and electors. 

 

Meanwhile the NEC also announced that, based on a report it received that 30 part timers were illegally mobilized and paid for a joint rally, an investigation is underway.
