88.8 Billion Won ($88.8 million USD) Reimbursements Including 20th National Assembly Campaign Expenses Paid

 

On June 10, the National Election Commission (NEC) of the Republic of Korea paid 88.8 Billion Won ($88.8 million USD) in reimbursed campaign expenses and funds that should be covered by the state to parties and candidates that participated in the 20th National Assembly elections.

 

Four parties and 671 candidates claimed 104 billion Korean won ($104 million USD) in campaign expenses and were reimbursed 83.6 percent of those claims, a total of 86.9 billion Korean won ($86.9 million USD). Also, ten parties and 897 candidates claimed 1.9 billion Korean won ($1.9 million USD) and were reimbursed 96.1% of those claims, a total of 1.8 billion Korean won ($1.8 million USD)

 

The NEC and each Si/Do Commission have thoroughly reviewed and conducted due diligence over the blast 50 days and in particular the political fund survey task force teams have actively been set up and extensively investigated the legitimacy of the claims. 

 

As a result 14 billion Korean won ($14 million USD) in reimbursements, which includes 11.9 billion Korean won ($11.9 million USD) from constituency member elections and 2.1 billion ($2.1 million USD) from proportional representation member elections, and 70 million Korean won ($60,000 USD) in expenses borne by the state were cut from the original amount claimed, and 300 million Korean won ($300,000 USD) was either limited or withheld. 

 

These figures cut from the original amount claimed for reimbursements and expenses borne by the state are 2.8 billion Korean won ($2.8 million USD) more than the amount cut from the claims made after the 19th National Assembly elections, which totaled 11.2 billion Korean won ($11.2 million USD), and the amount limited or withheld also rose by 180 million won ($180,000 USD) from 120 million won ($120,000 USD).
