5th Voter’s Day Held May 10
The National Election Commission (NEC) of the Republic of Korea held a ceremony for the 5th Voter’s Day on May 10 in the Gwacheon Community Center main hall.
The event, held under the slogan of ‘Beautiful Elections, Happy Korea,’ was attended by Lee In-Bok, the Chairperson of the NEC, and he was joined by 700 other attendees including Commissioners, NEC staff, election stakeholders and voters.
During the ceremony Chairperson Lee In-Bok gave a commemorative speech, merit awards in the field of elections were bestowed, and there was a congratulatory performance from the Gwacheon City Choir who sung the voter’s song, a vocalist and an opera singer.
Voter’s Day, Held Every Year on May 10 – First Held in 2012
Voter’s Day was first enacted into law in 2012 and is hosted to make the public aware about the importance of elections and participating in voting, as well as to shed light on the rights and responsibilities of voters.
The reason Voter’s Day is set on May 10 is for the celebration of the advancement of democracy with the first general elections on May 10, 1948, where all citizens of voting age could participate. This is because at this time these general elections were seen as the cornerstone of the development of Korean democracy and results in the birth of the constitution and the government.
