NEC Successfully Manages Election for the Head of the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation = Kim Byeong-won elected in run-off =
The NEC announced that Kim Byeong-won was elected as the Head of the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation on January 12, 2015
After the first round of voting failed to produce a majority candidate, a run-off election was held between the two candidates with the most votes; Kim Byeong-won and Lee Seong-hee. Kim was elected after receiving 163 of the 289 votes (56.4%).
The NEC was given the authority to conduct these elections when the Private Election Act was promulgated on the August 1, 2014. The NEC operated a special prevention and crackdown team that was focused on conducting preventive activities against violations such as bribery, circulating false information or slander against candidates and Agricultural Cooperative members using their position in the Federation to influence the election.
In particular, in this election efforts were made to ensure voters could compare the election pledges of the candidates through methods, such as delivering speeches on the candidate’s views before the election, resulting in the expansion of the voter’s rights to know.
The NEC announced that in the future, through the fair management of entrusted elections, it intends to ensure that a clean election culture will take route in everyday life.
