The first nation-wide simultaneous elections for the heads of Cooperatives were successfully held on March 11, in the form of entrusted election under the management of the National Election Committee (NEC). More than 1.84 million out of 2.29 million registered voters cast their ballots, tallying at 80.2% of turnout, which is higher than the average turnout (78.4%) over the past ten years. A total of 1,326 officials were elected (1,115 agriculture, 82 fisheries, 129 forest Cooperatives), including 714 incumbent and 5 women.
Such high turnout was possible thanks to both people’s great interest as the simultaneous elections for heads of Cooperatives were held for the first time, and enhanced voters’ convenience through the use of an integrated voters’ list.
The NEC allowed members of Cooperatives to participate in electoral process such as during voting and counting management, for the successful continuation of the elections on the future.
The NEC, with its full-strength and strong will to eradicate monetary election, took preventive measures against voters and candidates while investigating into violations and taking stern actions against those who violated Election Law.
Meanwhile, reflecting the opinions of the public and the media that there was not enough chance for candidates to inform and promote their pledges and visions due to confined election campaign rules, the NEC plans to collect ideas and analyze the problem.
The NEC will also hold a public hearing on March 19 and layout the recommendations to improve the election system for the Heads of Cooperatives in the second half of this year.
