Candidate Registration for April 12 By and Re-elections Closed, Average of 3.8 Candidates per Seat = Candidate to seat ratio 7 to 1 for the National Assembly member election, 5.3 to 1 for heads of local government elections, 3.3 to 1 for provisional council members and 3.6 to 1 for local council members =
The National Election Commission (NEC) of the Republic of Korea announced that, after receiving candidate registrations for the April 12 by and re-elections, 114 candidates registered in 30 districts, averaging a rate of 3.8 candidates for each seat up for election.
Seven candidates have registered in the by-election being held for a seat in the National Assembly, which is being held in a constituency in the Gyeongbuk region. In the elections for heads of local governments 4 candidates have registered for the election in Hanam-si and 6 candidates have registered for the elections in both Pocheon-si and Goesan-gun.
For the elections for provisional council members held in seven different constituencies, 23 candidates registered at an average of 3.3 per seat, and in the elections for local council members being held in 19 constituencies, 68 candidates registered at an average of 3.6 per seat.
Information on the candidates in these by and re-elections, including their property details and military service, their income tax, property tax and comprehensive real estate holding tax for the last five years, records of any unpaid taxes, any criminal records, any past registrations as a candidate for a public office election, and their career and academic history can be found on the NEC website (http://www.nec.go.kr).
The election campaign period is from March 30 to April 11, the day before the election day. Candidate campaign posters will be posted up by March 31 and election material in booklet form and election leaflets will be posted to households within the electoral district by April 2. Early voting will be held on April 7 and 8 from 6am to 6pm and citizens can vote from 6am to 8pm on election day itself.
