The National Election Commission (NEC) of the Republic of Korea announced that 30 re and by-elections will be held on April 12, including one for a seat in the National Assembly, three for the heads of local governments, seven for provincial council members, and 19 for local council members.
The election for a member of the National Assembly is being held in a constituency in the Gyeongbuk region, and elections for heads of local governments are being held in Hanam-si, Pocheon-si and Goesan-gun.
These re and by-elections are being held for vacant seats caused by an election being declared void or a resignation, retirement, or death which was confirmed between March 15, 2016 and March 13, 2017.
For vacancies caused by the above circumstances that are confirmed after March 14 but no later than 30 days before the 19th presidential election, re and by-elections will be held on the same day as the presidential election.
The candidate registration period for these re and by-elections may be held on March 23 and 24 from 9am to 6pm, and the official campaign period starts on March 30. The voters list will be drawn up from March 21 to 25 and then finalized on March 31.
Early voting will be held for two days on April 7 and 8 from 6am to 6pm. One early voting polling station shall be set up in each local district in all constituencies where re and by-elections are being held.
The voting hours on election day are 6am to 8pm and on election day itself each voter should go to their polling station in their registered polling district to vote.
The NEC announced that it will do its best to ensure the process is undertaken without any trouble through thorough checking, despite the fact there are some difficulties in preparing and managing both elections at the same time due to these by and re-elections and the 19th presidential election are being held only a month apart.
You can find more information on each of the re and by-elections to be held on April 12, such as the election schedule, preliminary candidate and full candidate information, data on voting and counting on election day can be found on the NEC website (http://www.nec.go.kr). |
