The National Election Commission said that the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation(NACF) entrusted the election for its chairperson to the NEC. The term of current NACF’s chairperson expires in December this year. It is the first time that the NEC is entrusted with managing this election. According to the Article 4 of Regulation for Entrusted Election of Public Organisation, the NEC will appoint the Seoul Election Commission as the Commission in charge of managing the election for the NACF’s chairperson. The Seoul Election Commission will be responsible for candidate registration, voting and counting management, activities to enhance public awareness and promotion, and enforcement and investigation on electoral law violations. As stipulated by the Charter of the NACF, the Seoul Election Commission and the NACF will determine election day through consultation. The candidate registration period is seven days, starting from the next day of announcing election day. The winner of the election will be declared if he or she wins more than a majority of the vote cast, provided that a majority of the electorate participated in voting. The NEC has been already administering such diverse elections as follows: nomination of candidates for the president of National University; Chairperson of National Federation Fisheries Cooperatives and the Federation of Small and Medium Business; Heads of various Cooperatives including Agricultural, Fisheries, Livestock, and Forestry Cooperatives; Executive Members of Housing Renovation Project Association; Commissioners of the Preparatory Committee for Housing Renovation Project-including the Associations of Housing Redevelopment, and Housing Rebuilding; and the representatives of Apartment Houses Residents. In addition to the election for the NACF’s chairperson, the NEC will also be entrusted with managing the election for executive members of the Korean Federation of Community Credit Cooperative, scheduled for September, 2011. The NEC has extended its involvement to various public organisations and non-public offices elections, based on its reputation for the impartiality and expertise. The NEC will conduct various entrusted elections in a fair manner with rigorous monitoring and enforcement activities. It will contribute to promoting the practice of conducting elections in a fair and transparent manner. |
