According to the National Election Commission, 861,867 absentee voters have been confirmed as eligible to vote in the 19th National Assembly elections. The figure is equal to 2.1% of the total number of voters (40,193,603) after the voters list being finalized. The number has reduced by 70,134 from 932,001 eligible absentee voters in the 5th local elections. It has increased, though, by 36,012 from 825,855 absentee voters in the 18th National Assembly elections. 755,041 out of the confirmed absentee voters may vote at polling stations for absentee voters while 106,826 may vote at their current residential places. That includes nursing homes, hospitals and their own homes. By social positions, the number of military people and police officials is 563,071, making up 65.3% of the entire absentee voters. The number of ordinary citizens is 210,957 while that of election management personnel comes to 87,839. The NEC is scheduled to send out an absentee voting paper along with an absentee voting guide and the election campaign leaflets submitted by the candidates to each absentee voter by April 2. Any absentee voter may visit any nearby polling stations for absentee voting across the country, carrying with the absentee voting paper he/she has received earlier. Absentee voting will take place for two days from April 5 to 6. The location of polling stations for absentee voting may be checked easily through the NEC’s website (http://www.nec.go.kr). Relevant assistance may also be provided via 1390 Call. Absentee voting hours are between 10am and 4pm for 2 days from April 5 to 6. It should be brought to the public attention that the absentee voting paper already marked before an absentee voter arrives at a polling station will be regarded as invalid. The persons to vote at their residences must mark absentee voting papers with pens at their current residential places, put the papers in the envelopes and post them to the election commissions concerned. The marked papers must be returned to the election commissions concerned by 6pm on election day. |
