The National Election Commission, on March 26, provided 34.39 billion Korean won as election subsidies to 7 parties and 1.13 billion Korean won as female candidate nomination subsidies to 2 parties. Election subsidies are provided in an election year (elections following the completion of the terms of office) to the parties that nominate candidates. Below is the calculation of election subsidies: The total number of voters who were entitled to vote in the previous National Assembly elections is multiplied by an appropriate unit price (in case of the 19th National Assembly elections, 910 KRW). The requirements for the distribution and provision of election subsidies only apply to the parties that nominate a candidate. 50% of the total amount shall be apportioned equally to the parties that have formed a negotiating group at the time of distribution. 5% of the total amount shall be provided to the parties with more than 5 but less than 20 seats in the Assembly. The parties with less than 5 seats or none that also meet specified requirements will be given 2% of the total amount. Finally, half of the rest shall be given by the ratio of seats taken by each party in the National Assembly. The other half shall be distributed depending on the ratio of votes gained by each party in the 18th National Assembly elections. Accordingly, the NEC has given the Saenuri 15.7 billion KRW, the Democratic United 12.3 billion KRW, the Liberty Forward 2.4 billion KRW, the United Progressive 2.1 billion KRW, the Creative Korea 800 million KRW, the Korea Vision 23 million KRW and the New Progressive 600 million KRW. On the other hand, female candidate nomination subsidies are given to the parties that nominate a female candidate for district representative of the National Assembly. The following shows how female candidate nomination subsidies are calculated: the total number of voters in the 18th National Assembly elections is multiplied by 100 KRW. The total amount is apportioned by the ratio of the female candidates nominated by each party. If there is a party that has nominated more than 30% of candidates for district representatives of the National Assembly nationwide, 50% of the total female candidate nomination subsidies shall be divided by the ratio of seats taken by each party at the time of distribution. The rest of the subsidies shall be apportioned by the ratio of votes gained by each party in the 18th National Assembly elections. In case no party has nominated more than 30% of candidates, 50% of the total subsidies shall be given to the parties that have nominated between 15% and 30%. The parties nominating between 5% and 15% will be given 30% of the total subsidies. The distribution shall be based on the ratio of seats taken by each party and the ratio of votes gained by each party in the 18th National Assembly elections. The Saenuri party that has nominated 16 candidates (6.5%) has received 744 million KRW. The Democratic United party, on the other hand, has nominated 21 female candidates (8.5%) and received 389 million KRW. The number of female candidates nominated by the rest of the political parties has not reached 5% of candidates for district representatives of the National Assembly. These parties have therefore ended up receiving no subsidies. According to the NEC, no party has met requirements for the disabled nomination subsidies (nominate more than 1% of candidates for district representatives of the National Assembly nationwide) and received any subsidies. <Current Status of the Election Subsidies Distributed to Each Party> (unit:KRW)
