The National Election Commission announced that the candidates’ posters for the 18th Presidential election would be post up from November 30. The posters contain the photos, careers and educational backgrounds of candidates as well as other necessary information for promotion. Those posters are therefore expected to enable voters to easily compare candidates who run for the election. Recently, banners of the candidates have been spoiled intentionally, so the NEC has decided to strengthen activities of prevention and enforcement. Election commissions will strengthen the patrol within the district working in close cooperation with the police, as organizing and running patrol/ enforcement units out of around 4,000 members of the Election Surveillance Unit nationwide. Stringent measures including accusation will be taken against the vandalism on posters or placards of candidates. According to the Public Official Election Act (Article 240), Violators of regulations (tearing or removing posters) may be subject to a penalty of up to two years in jail or a fine of up to KRW 4 million. Persons scribbling on posters and banners will be also subject to the above punishment. The NEC has asked all the citizens to actively participate in holding a fair and free election as observing the law.
