4,614 Korean Expats Participate in Mock Overseas Voting

in Preparation for National Assembly Elections in 2016

The National Election Commission (NEC) has announced that 167 Diplomatic Offices simultaneously held mock overseas voting on June 29th (Korean local time) in preparation for the 20th National Assembly Elections in April 2016.

A total of 4,614 Koreans living overseas participated in mock voting that took place in 167 Diplomatic Offices around the world. During the process, officers who manage overseas voting (the head of the diplomatic office) send ballots in return envelops to the NEC through diplomatic pouches, and then the NEC send them to lower level election commissions in local administrative districts (Gu/Si/Gun) by registered post.

Gu/Si/Gun election commissions will manage the counting of the ballots on July 8.

The NEC expressed its gratitude to Koreans living overseas who took their time to participate in the voting even though it was a mock program, adding that their participation made the voting more meaningful.

Furthermore, the NEC noted that, once the ballot counting is finished, it will analyze and assess the entire process so that any issues that are identified are rectified before October this year when the preparation for overseas voting for the 20th National Assembly Elections 2016 will be in full swing.
