Inauguration of the 18th Chairperson of the National Election Commission, Commissioner Lee In-Bok

= Appoint Chief Justice Cho Byeong Hyun of Daejeon High Court as a new Commissioner =

  The National Election Commission (NEC) held the entire Commission meeting and elected a Commissioner Lee In-Bok by a mutual vote for the 18th chairperson of the National Election Commission and had an inauguration ceremony on March 6.

  The new Chairperson, Mr. Lee In-Bok, expressed his ambition at his inaugural speech that he will keep impartial and strict in electoral management affairs without any regret on his conscience in front of the public and history as well as concentrate all efforts on developing democratic politics and embodying public sovereignty.

In his address, Mr. Lee stressed the role of NEC as follows:

▲ The fair electoral management shall thoroughly abide by the law and always be neutral and impartial, bearing in mind that it is constitutional responsibility;

▲ It shall understand what the public want in advance and provide an electoral administration service sympathized with the public by gathering their opinions actively;

▲ It shall make strenuous efforts in advancing electoral system including abolition of illogical regulations in line with changed electoral environment and the level of matured public awareness; and

▲ It shall set up a method of improving voting convenience for voters and a measure of fostering citizen awareness on democracy and shall do its best to realize them.

  Meanwhile, the NEC said that Chief Justice of the Supreme Court designated Mr. Cho Byeong-Hyun, Chief Justice of Daejeon High Court on March 6 in succession to Commissioner Kim Jin-Gwon.

  The National Election Commission is composed of 9 Commissioners. In accordance with Article 114 of the Constitution, 3 Commissioners are appointed by the President, 3 elected by the National Assembly and 3 nominated by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
