The National Election Commission launched an examination on the actual condition of facilities for disabled voters such as wheelchair access at 13,482 polling stations nationwide which will be installed for the 18th Presidential Election.

The NEC announced that they had ordered Gu/Si/Gun Election Commissions to examine the facilities for disabled voters at polling stations for the 18th Presidential Election. The facilities include Braille blocks on the floor for blind voters, wheelchair access and temporary ramps.

In addition, the NEC ordered Gu/Si/Gun Election Commissions to conduct the examination in cooperation with the Association of the Disabled Citizens, political parties, local governments, etc. and if possible to involve these organizations in the process. Also, if there is any suggestion for improvement made by the Association of the Disabled Citizens and so forth, it shall be actively reflected in the process of installing polling stations.

The NEC is scheduled to implement comprehensive measures to provide convenience for disabled voters, including results of the examination. The NEC also plans to finalize the selection of polling stations in early stage and provide information on the location of polling stations through the NEC website for voters’ convenience.

The NEC made it clear that it would constantly make efforts to ensure participation by disabled voters. The NEC also stressed that infrastructure would be needed to enable disabled voters to vote without any inconvenience.
