The NEC announced that the total amount of deposit entrusted to election commissions in 2010 amounted to about 7 billion won. It said that about 78,000 people deposited political funds in the NEC in the past year. Of them, about 75,000 people (99.7% of the total) contributed a small amount of no more than 100,000 won, adding up to 96.6% (6.72 billion won) of the total amount. The NEC analysed that the practice of making a small contribution has been gradually taking root. It reckons that the yearning of the people for advanced politics and consistent effort of the NEC for making political funds more transparent have contributed to making such progress. Individuals including public officials can entrust deposit to election commissions while a donation is made to the political fundraising associations of particular politicians. Individuals can entrust deposit by visiting election commissions at various levels or visiting an online political funds centre(www.give.go.kr) run by the NEC. Those who give political funds can receive tax deduction of 100,000 won at the maximum amount, and income deduction for the amount exceeding 100,000 won, in the year-end tax adjustment. The NEC has been encouraging more people to make a small amount contribution and endeavouring to come up with measures to devise various ways of making contribution. It has asked for more interest and participation from the people to put the culture of raising political funds in a more transparent way. |
