The National Election Commission announced that 123,571 voters, 5.53% of the estimated number of overseas voters, are registered on the confirmed electoral register. This has become known after the NEC confirmed the overseas voters list and overseas absentees list on March 12 and these lists will be used in the 19th National Assembly Elections coming up on April 11. The process lasted from March 3 to 7 to review the overseas voters list and the overseas absentees list which had been prepared respectively by the NEC and Gu/Si/Gun offices by March 2. This review is to confirm whether or not the persons on the lists have rights to vote considering nationality, age and any conviction with an imprisonment sentence. The review process also includes public reading of the electoral register and cases of objections raised and appeals lodged. The total number of persons registered on the list consists of 103,635 overseas absentees and 19,936 overseas voters, out of which 67,888 are male and 55,683 female. By regional groups, Seoul comes first with the most number of registrants, 44,451 followed by Gyeonggi with 29,785 and Busan with 7,943. On the other hand, Sejong Special Autonomous City shows the least number of registrants, 146 in the country. 102,519 among the overseas absentees are the registered residents who are entitled to vote to select district representatives of the National Assembly. By electoral districts, Gangnam-gu A shows the largest number, 2000 while Yeongcheon-si shows the smallest number, 81. The overseas voters on the confirmed electoral register will be able to vote in person after identification checks at overseas polling places between March 28 and April 2. Overseas polling places will be established at 158 overseas missions. The NEC encourages these voters to cast their ballots for an overseas voting which takes place for the first time after the introduction of the system to turn out to be a success. |
