The National Election Broadcasting Debates Commission, an attached organisation of the NEC dealing with broadcasts for election campaigns, hosted the Second Public Policy Debate at the KBS TS-4 studio on April 23, 2010. As the 5th Nationwide Local Elections is approaching, the Debate was aired live for two hours from 10 am through main broadcasting channels to enhance voters’ right to be provided information on platforms of political parties.

The participants of the Debate were chairpersons of policy boards within five main political parties. They discussed job creation policies and government’s public expenditure according to the programme: the discussants, firstly, answered to the compere’s questions on debate topics and had chances to exchange views of party platforms through group discussion. Thanks to the Public Policy Debate, voters are able to learn parties’ pledges and cast their votes based on pledges rather than partisan feeling or regionalism.

The Third Public Policy Debate will be hosted on May 6, 2010. In the final Debate, five main party leaders will debate on national security related to the sinking of navy ship, Cheonanham, near the boarder with North Korea and the 5th Nationwide Local Elections. The NEC does expect that voters will put more stress on platforms in the local elections based on the Public Policy Debates.
