Amending Electoral Law

The Public Official Election Law was revised to harmonize electoral freedom with fairness by intensifying voters’


right protection and reforming unreasonable restrictions on election campaigns.


 


The chairperson of the National Election Commission of Korea (NEC) has announced that the political and


electoral culture will be improved with the newly amended electoral law which had been promulgated on January


25, 2010. He made additional remarks that the NEC will make efforts to eliminate electoral frauds such as public


servants'' involvement in campaigning, bribery, etc. in coming local elections on June 2.


 


   Main Contents of Amendments


Anyone who conducts public opinion polls during the 181-day period leading up to and including the date of


    an election shall present a written report that includes the purpose of polls, survey methods, contents etc.


    to the competent election commissions by no later than 2 days before the starting date of polls.


Heads of local governments shall not appear on commercial regardless of any reason at any time.


Fine for negligence that used to be imposed at a flat rate of 50 times on any electoral violations has been


    adjusted to 10 times or more, but less than 50 times of the money and goods received.


 


The NEC operates "Election Guidance Programme" that allows prospective candidates to recognize the major


contents of amendments. Furthermore, the NEC express clearly that it will improve the electoral and political culture


through the free, fair and transparent elections using all internal resources and civil associations, as well.
